Hormones: Thyroid

Your thyroid effects every cell in your body. Its job is to regulate your body temperature and metabolism. Thyroid also helps break down fat, which often results in weight loss. Having the correct levels of thyroid in your system is an indispensable part of your hormone regimen.

Symptoms of thyroid deficiency or imbalance include:

  • Fatigue
  • Low energy
  • Slow thinking and actions
  • Forgetfulness
  • Mental confusion
  • Depression
  • Arthritis-like pain
  • Susceptibility to colds and infections
  • Thinning hair or brittle nails, dry skin

You may have been told that your symptoms are due to normal aging. State-of-the-art research now tells us that these may be symptoms of thyroid insufficiency. Many physicians who  believe in the “old” medical paradigm tell patients there is no problem with their thyroid because their blood tests are within a “normal” range. This “normal” range, which may be normal for a certain age group, may not be normal for your specific health needs.

In addition, you may have been told your thyroid is normal because most physicians rely only on one thyroid blood test, the TSH. The TSH only measures the indirect measurement of your thyroid function.

The new paradigm for testing thyroid  function is to measure  the free T-3 level, which is a more accurate measure of how your body is actually functioning. While some physicians may measure the free T-3, they often still rely on the lab’s “normal” levels. Taking the correct amount of bio-identical thyroid raises your levels to those of a younger person – so that you return to the health and vitality of your youth.
